With the aim of strengthening public policies to guarantee the rights and voices of children and adolescents in all government actions, the candidates for the government of Mexico City signed today the initiative “Commitment to Children, #SuFuturoEsHOY”. Driven by civil society organizations dedicated to defending and promoting the rights of children and adolescents throughout the country, this initiative It addresses ten thematic areas to guarantee the well-being and comprehensive development of children and adolescents in Mexico.
Access to water and food, Health, education, violence-free spaces, and happiness were among the topics discussed between children and adolescents and candidates Salomón Chertorivski and Santiago Taboada. “Children need to develop in a city that includes them,” affirmed Santiago Taboada, while Salomón Chertorivski emphasized, “I am convinced that a country’s level of development should be measured by the level of attention given to its children.” For her part, Clara Brugada, in a video message sent to children, stated, “We are going to work to make the utopia of childhood happiness a reality. We must guarantee that children can be whatever they want to be.”
Children and teenagers present questioned the candidates about how they would guarantee that their proposals would be implemented., as well as access to housing and decent wages in the face of displacement due to the high cost of living in Mexico City; the conditions of poverty and inequality experienced by indigenous children; access to healthy food that reduces childhood obesity levels in the country; access to water in the face of the water crisis and options for children living with a disability.
“Commitment to Children” is an initiative that represents an opportunity for children and adolescents to express their concerns and proposals to candidates through an intergenerational dialogue that takes each mobilizing axis as a reference point: Happy and safe childhood; Girls alive and free; Healthy and educated childhoods; Children living with loving families; Childhoods with priority for inclusion; Children in situations of mobility; Connected and safe childhoods; Childhood good for democracy; Child protection systems; and Investing today in the future of children.
“Commitment to Children” is a civil society initiative to emphasize and remind candidates that children and adolescents are rights holders and agents of change in their daily lives; therefore, we call on presidential candidates to join this commitment in order to to ensure that public policies at all levels of government are oriented towards the protection and promotion of the rights of children and adolescents because #SuFuturoEsHOY.
